I struggled with addiction and my weight for a number of years. Rucking became my recovery and my lifestyle, keep reading to learn more and join me and many others to make your Rucking Wild journey.
Back in April 2020 at the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic and lockdown, I was 16 stone (224lbs for my friends overseas) and drinking daily. I was working from home but that did not stop me from drinking.
My drinking and my weight had become a problem. Drinking was no longer fun, it was an addiction. I was unhappy, depressed definitely and the lockdown was only going to make it worse. I had to make a change. I tried so many times before but this time was different…
I found a 30-day program, which offered a 30 day “experiment” to stop drinking. There was no pressure, it consisted of watching at least one informative video a day, journaling and of course cutting out alcohol (if you were able) for the full 30 days. I decided to give it a try, I was sceptical and I did not think I would be able to make it to 3 days never mind 30.
Surprisingly I managed the 30 days and decided that I wanted to go longer, “What if I can make 2 months?”.
At the same time I was looking into ways that I could help manage my recovery, keep focused and benefit further, so I started to walk. The lockdown rulings at that time stipulated only 1 hour of exercise was permitted outside in a day. I have always loved the outdoors so just simply walking felt right.
I started to walk as far as I could in the allotted hour. I would walk somewhere, any direction for 30 minutes and then walk back. After a couple of weeks I wanted to challenge myself more; I began to “Ruck”.
Rucking is walking or running with a weighted rucksack, hence the term “RucK”. Rucking introduced a strength dynamic to my walking, this enabled me to increase the weight or change my speed of ruck. I now had something I could focus my mind on my goals on which was helping with my recovery from addiction. My hard work paid off too, I began to lose weight steadily, losing 4 stone (52lbs) in less than a year just from walking and not drinking. Rucking and being alcohol free has become a lifestyle.
It’s been over 2 years since I had my last drink and there is almost never a day that I do not Ruck.
I still pinch myself every day, just to see if this is real, is my sober life real, my recovery, my weight loss? I want to share my story, I want you to experience and benefit from what I have learned. I want you to understand the power of the Ruck and the outdoors.

With the wilderness in front of you, a rucksack on your back and kitted out in Rucking Wild apparel , you can achieve anything.
Rucking is walking with a weighted backpack or RUCKsack! Some may call it Tabbing dependant on what you know. It is a military term but has grown beyond that, into a way of life for many, especially in the States. Rucking is, in essence, an exercise routine mixing walking or hiking with the added weight within a bag. The additional weight builds strength and in my case helps with weightloss.
